Normally when we do migrations, we already have the computer accounts created on the new domain.
Sometimes, we need to change the computer names to match our current naming convention.

I'd like to use the csv file so the script can do the renaming, but it requires entering an AD path if using a lookup file.

Is there any way around this?  ie, can I specify something, then go back through the VBS script and edit out the path, without causing the script to fail when run?

Hi,

Is the problem that the computer accounts are in different containers?

yes, they most likely will be.

I work for the state, so we have different containers for different divisions of our department.

Each division gets it's own container, and then within the division container, there are 3 more containers; 1 for each area.  IE, we would have for example Dept. of Juvenile Justice.  Within the DJJ container, would be 3 more containers; ANC_PC, FAI_PC, and JNU_PC.  All computers that the ANC office support, would go into the ANC_PC folder, all FAI-supported computers in the FAI_PC container, and same with JNU_PC.

Now, of course I could create a script for each area, but of course that would be a lot of scripts, since we support a total of around 20 divisions, each with outlying offices, needing 3 sub-containers each.

Hi,

It is not going to be too difficult to automate this - either via a look-up file, or by modifying the script directly. The main issue will be finding something on each machine that will identify it as being in a given division and needing to go in a particular sub-container.

One way would be to list all the computers in a file, but that doesn't sound very practical, so identifying some data on the machine is likely to be the way to go.

You are welcome to email support@ForensiT.com to discuss this further if you would like to.
