Hi,
I've just used DefProf with Win 7 Ultimate 32bit and it worked fine except that the desktop gadgets in the source profile didn't open in the target? The Windows Sidebar application was running when I fired up the target profile for the first time but it didn't display at all... everything else seems fine but it just left me wondering if there were other things that might not work that I haven't seen yet? Any ideas? Steve Edited by harrismail - 28 Sep 2010 at 4:13am |

If I copy the folder
c:\Users\Source\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\ to c:\Users\target\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\ then as if by magic the sidebar and gadgets work OK? Steve |

That makes sense. DefProf does not copy the files in this folder.
There is always a balance to be struck between "personal" settings and "default" settings. For example, you wouldn't want to copy Outlook settings to the default profile. However, in this case may be gadgets should in included.

Maybe just the gadgets :-)
I've read quite a lot of articles about copying and modifying the default profile in Win 7 etc and on a test machine I've tried to rename an existing profile and replace the default one but even though it seemed to work I didn't like "the unknowns" that may occur in the future with this method? I think using DefProf is a safer option? (maybe with gadgets) Steve |

One last observation...
What is the "User Pinned Properties" that appears in the Quick Launch Toolbar on a new account? (I've tweaked 7 to have my trusty QL) Steve Edited by harrismail - 28 Sep 2010 at 8:06am |

Obviously, there isn't a Quick Launch Tool bar on Windows 7 - there's the taskbar instead, which you can pin stuff to. DefProf handles this.
Are you adding a New Toolbar? If so, where is the folder located? (Inside or outside the profile folder?)

No I understand that Quick Launch isn't any longer a standard part of Windows 7 but there is a quick way to get it back - here:-
http://www.techradar.com/news/software/operating-systems/62-windows-7-tips-tricks-and-secrets-643861?artc_pg=2 Article 26 After enabling Quick Launch in the source profile I noticed a "User Pinned Properties" entry appears in the newly created profiles QL toolbar? I deleted it as it seemed only to be a shortcut (I think) Steve |

An updated version of DefProf is now available from the Support Downloads page. The update copies the sidebar and gadgets to the default profile as discussed.
We followed the instructions and created a QL Toolbar, but we did not see a "User Pinned Properties" entry in the newly created toolbar. (We did just have the default items.)

Maybe I'm special :-)
I'll post a screengrab in a little while so you can see exactly the "User Pinned Properties" thing! Thanks for the gadgets update. Steve |
