I'm a first time user and trying to use the User Profile Wizard. SBS 2003 recently crashed and I set up a new SBS 2008. I'm trying to rejoin a PC to the new box, using the same domain name as used previously. This workstation was joined to the domain before the crash, but the user always logged in locally instead of to the domain, so all her documents, settings, and customizations are stored in the local user account. When I ran the wizard, it joined the workstation to the domain, but it did not copy the documents and settings, even though I selected the local profile as the one I wanted to use. I've tried it several times, sometimes restoring a copy of the registry first so it could perform in the original state.
What I'd like to see happen is to not only rejoin the domain, but also to copy the docs and settings from the local profile and make them the domain profile.
Am I using the program wrong, or maybe have an incorrect expectation of what the wizard alone can do. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi, User Profile Wizard does not copy profile data - at least not by default. Instead it configures the existing user profile "in place" so that it can be used by the uer's new domain account. To migrate to SBS you should run the SBS "Join Computer" Wizard first, and then run User Profile Wizard to migrate the user profiles. |

That's pretty much what I want it to do. Once joined to the domain (this particular profile is currently a local profile and not the domain profile), I'd like to see the original documents and settings in place, but instead, the profile wizard creates a new user profile and joins that to the domain. Running Profile Wizard at that point still does not migrate the data, even when pointed to the original profile.
From the blog - "...some folks just want to see a copy of the original profile for the new user account. The new 'CopyProfile' setting in Profwiz.config allows you to do just that."
This is exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe it's because I downloaded the personal edition and it does not come with profwiz.config. Using the profwiz.exe, including the procedure listed above, does not get me a functional copy of the original user profile. If this is a feature of the paid version only I certainly understand and will purchase a copy today. I just thought it was free for personal use.
Thanks again for your help. |

User Profile Wizard should still migrate the profile even though it does not copy it. The Wizard does not create the new profile - the new profile is created by Windows. You need to make sure you reboot the machine after the migration: that way you will either get the migrated profile or an error that will tell you why the profile cannot be loaded. The different Editions of User Profile Wizard have different features. There is a feature comparison here. To create copy profiles you need the Corporate Edition. If you only have a handful of machines to migrate you could use User Profile Manager to copy the profiles - you can use it free for 14 days. The machines will need to be already joined to the domain. |

Which application does "Join Computer" Wizard: Transwiz, User Profile Manager, or User Profile Wizard? I would be happy to follow any steps you give me and if I need to buy the products to get them fully functional so be it. Also, after executing User Profile Wizard how do I go back to step one and start over? Is it important to create a profile first before starting?

BTW, all of this is on Windows 7 and I am trying to move everything from one user to another and remove the old user after my documents and profile settings are migrated/transferred over to the new user. I am using version 3.5.

I found what you were referring to in the Personal Edition of User Profile Wizard that allowed "Join Computer/Domain" and it blocked any ability to select that option, even though it was supposed to be available.

User Profile Wizard is a workstation domain migration tool. By default, it does not move, copy or delete any data. Instead it configures the existing profile "in place" so that it can be used by the user’s new domain account. If you want to create a copy of a profile - instead of just assigning an existing profile to a new account - you can use User Profile Manager, or you can use Transwiz to create a backup of a profile that you can then restore for use with a different user account. The Personal Edition does not block the ability to join a domain in any way - it is a domain migration tool. You need to make sure there is a tick in the "Join Domain" checkbox.
