Probably listed here a bunch of times but I wanted to verify. Currently have about 20 computers connected to a SBS2003 server. We will be installing new hardware running Windows Server 2012 R2. To migrate workstations using User Profile Wizard Personal do I just do the following on each workstation:
1) Logon to the workstation using the original account; 2) Run User Profile Wizard; 3) Enter the new domain (will need to type this in as the new domain shouldn't be listed)? 4) Select the Join Domain check box; 5) Enter the account name for this workstation (same as old one); 6) Check the "Set as default logon"; 7) Click Next; 8) Select the old profile name "old_domain\account_name"; 9) Click Next; 10) Reboot. Or do I need to create a new user account first and join that to the new domain and then run through the wizard using the old profile name? |

After doing some more reading it looks like I will be going from sbs2003 to windows server 2012 essentials so I need to use the connect wizard in 2012 easentials. Sine the connect wizard in 2012 doesn't allow a computer to connect that is already joined to a domain it sounds like I need to do the following.
1) Unjoin the domain 2) create a new local account 3) use the wizard to migrate the old domain profile to the new local account 4) using the new local account join 2012 essentials using the connect software, which should migrate the local account. Sound about right? |

You should use the 2012 Essentials "Connect" tool to join the machine to the new domain and then use User Profile Wizard to migrate the profiles. The user accounts already have to exist in the new domain; you should not logon with the user's new domain account before migrating the profile. |

Thank you for the response, please see additional questions in line:
1) Install User Profile Wizard on new Server and run the wizard to create the config file. 2) Create all domain user accounts on new SBS 2011 Server So we add each user account on the new server... ok 3) Turn off old server 4) Visit each workstation and login in as an administrator and run http://sbs2011_server/connect First are we saying using a LOCAL Admin account and not using the users account (i.e. local.machine/administrator)? Second, not sure how you use the connect software until you actually unjoin from the old domain as the connect software should't allow this? Third when we use the connect software we are using the user's account setup added in step 2? You just need to logon with a local admin account. It needs to be a local admin account because if - as you say - you cannot use the Connect tool if the machine is already joined to a domain, you will need to unjoin the machine from the SBS2003 domain, so you won't be able to logon using a SBS2003 domain account. 5) Reboot PC and and log into new domain as administrator So now we're logged on as new.domain/administrator and not new.domain/user? Correct 6) Run User Profile Wizard from a USB stick at each PC 7) Instruct UPW to connect the User.OldDomain profile to the new User.NewDomain account So we select the NewDomain from the drop down list and type in the user name that we added in step 2? Correct 8) Reboot and log in as User.NewDomain So this is the first time we actually login as the new user, and this will update the old domain profile migrated in step 7 to the new domain? Correct 9) Turn OldServer back on and move any rogue user files from the old server to the user's directory on the new server Not using roaming profiles so not sure what this is...? Probably doesn't apply to you. Sorry for so many questions! Thanks again!! Edited by Support - 21 Oct 2013 at 5:14am |
