We are in the pilot phase of migrating our users to a new domain and while using the User Profile Wizard 2.5, which works pretty well, but we have come across one issue with a couple of clients.  The issue that we are getting is that when the user (who has local admin rights) is logged into the new domain, after using your Profile Wizard, they are unable to see "Hidden Files and Shares" in Windows Explorer (XP).  When we go into Windows Explorer and select Tools > Folder Options > View (tab) > Show Hidden files and folders is already selected and we try to select Do Not show and then save and go back into it to select Do Show it it did not save our last request and Show Hidden Files and Folders is still selected.

If we login under Administrator we can see all of the Windows Hidden files and folders but not under any user that logs in even if they have local admin rights to the new or old domains.

Also just to point out that we did run the User Profile Wizard 2.5 tool while logged in as the user we were migrating should we be logging in under the administrator or does that matter?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

We haven't seen this before. The "Show hidden files and folders" option is stored in the registry under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced key with the name "Hidden". The REG_DWORD value is 1 to show hidden files and 2 not to show hidden files. You should check security permissions on the key to see if they have been changed from the default. It may be that the new domain account does not have permission to change (or perhaps view) this key.

If you logon as a different domain user (and create a new profile) and you still get the problem, something else is going on. There doesn't appear to be a specific Group Policy that effects hidden files and folders, but another Policy maybe having an impact.
