Hi All,
I've been looking all over the web for software that will simply move the user profile from the C:\ drive to D:\

Then we are going to freeze the c:\ so that the users can't install anymore junk on there systems.

What product do you recommend?

Hi Jay,

We would use - User Profile Manager . There are however, a few things you will need to do manually.

Firstly you will need change the machine's default Profile Directory. You do this by changing the "ProfilesDirectory" string value in the registry under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList registry key. You are probably going to want to change this to something like D:\Documents and Settings.

Note that if User Profile Manger is already installed, you will also need to change the "ProfilesDirectory" string value under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ForensiT\gina key too.

Next you should copy over the "Default User" profile from C:\Documents and Settings to D:\Documents and Settings. This is so that anyone new logging onto the machine will get a profile created in the right place. The "Default User" folder is hidden.

Now it's easy. Open up User Profile Manager, select "Copy To..." and tick the "Set As User's Profile" check box. User Profile Manager does not delete the original profile folder from C:\Documents and Settings, but you can do this once you know everything is working.

One thing we wouldn't recommend is trying to move the "All Users" profile folder. The registry is packed with references to "c:\Documents and Settings\All Users"

Hope this helps.
