I am not sure if this was actually caused by transwiz but I suspect I may get an explanation here that will guide me in the right direction.

There were some twists and turns that I went through, so I will be blunt:
After running tranwiz, I now have two near-identical domain users:
"C:\Users\myname.SERVER2003.000"
and
"C:\Users\myname.SERVER2003"

I am stuck on which one to trust and use.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Craig,

You do not have near-identical domain users, you have near-identical user profile folder names for the same user.

When you transfer a profile, Transwiz creates a new profile folder for the user. Transwiz follows the standard Windows naming convention: it starts with C:\Users\myname, and if that folder already exists it appends the domain name - C:\Users\myname.SERVER2003, and if that folder already exists it adds numbers - starting with C:\Users\myname.SERVER2003.000.

You can find which profile Windows is using by logging in, going to a command prompt and entering echo %USERPROFILE%

Aaah, that corresponds to my scenario. Thank you for the clarification.

Which brings me to finding a solution. I had started to peruse Micro$oft's forums and will need to follow up when time permits.

Does Forensit offer a tool to clean up this scenario?
Could you recommend a Micro$oft tool to do so?

Thank you again.

Craig,

The paid-for editions of User Profile Wizard (Professional or Corporate) will rename a profile, fixing all profile paths in the registry, etc. You will however need to delete the profiles folders you do not want.

Good afternoon everyone,

We just purchased 5 licenses of TransWiz and have the issue as posted here. If I restore a TransWiz file it will duplicate an already existing user profile. It does not ask to merge, and we need to use the scripts to automate the process. Is there anyway we can have the applications use the existing profile if it already exists and only create it if it is missing?

This is a huge roadblock for us otherwise and one we cannot get around easily.

Thanks!

There is no functionality in Transwiz that enables the automatic merging of data if a profile already exists. This would require a code change. That's not impossible, but you will need to contact support@ForensiT.com.

Thank you for your quick response. I will contact support and see if they can add it to the road map. My additional concern is that pg 17 of the manual states that merging of profiles can be accomplished (GUI) as well as the inclusion of the "Overwrite" parameter in the transwiz.config file for scripted use (pg 26). How can there every be an overwrite issue if the restoration of the profile can not use an existing one?

We will work around the issue as much as we can.

Thanks
